The Water Education Awards Banquet was held at the Loveland Living Planet Aquarium, hosted by the Utah Division of Water Resources. The event is designed to focus on and celebrate participating 4th grade students in DWR's Young Artists' Poster Contest. Students and their families, and some teachers, travel to the event from across the state, some as far as Blanding, UT.

Discussed the wonder of water; why do we need water (life, Oxygen in air made by plants that need water, to keep clean (a child dies every 15 seconds because of polluted water); how much of the earth is covered in water; why do we need glaciers (water cycle).

Students of the congregation, grades 3 – 6 plus “T.A. Helpers” grades 7 - 9. Discussion about the importance of preventing water pollution through ground cover – percolation and then experimenting outside with observing how water moves through different organic and nonorganic materials (eg soil with plant growth and roots; bark; wood shavings; gravel, etc.). 40 books given out: 30 students (both students and TA helpers), 2 for their library,
1 for each of the 6 “other” adults, and 2 for the teacher.

Discussion of the many important uses of water – sustain life, essential to plant growth which gives us oxygen, food, materials to build homes, schools, etc. Importance of glaciers, ice sheets, etc. where they are located how they are important to powering the winds to motor the water cycle. Read The Hogan that Great-Grandfather Built (Navajo) to reflect cultural importance of water with students - using sign language to participate in the refrain “Navajo home that Great Grandfather built long ago with his hands out of earth, water and trees.”
