Salt Lake City Workshop- in partnership with the University of Utah VPR office.

This is intended as a follow-up activity to the 2016 Alan Alda Center for
Communicating Science workshop and the 2017 Broader Impacts Forum that iUTAH
sponsored together with the University of Utah Vice President for Research Office
and the Utah State University Office of Research and Graduate Studies. In the Alda
workshop, participants learned how to craft effective messages to communicate
scientific concepts to diverse audiences (public, media, stakeholders) in a dynamic
and compelling way using improvisation-based techniques. The Broader Impacts
Forum was geared towards highlighting the value of engaging the public,
particularly groups that are underserved by, or inattentive to, science, in the
research enterprise.
This new workshop merges these two goals by giving participants the opportunity
to consider their science communication goals and needs in a more strategic
manner; reimagine science communication as a proactive rather than reactive
endeavor; and explore social media channels, other communication tools, and in-
person outreach as viable components of a holistic science communication strategy.
The event is geared towards researchers, faculty, graduate students, and other
practitioners who want to create or grow their own outreach or science
communication efforts; create stronger broader impacts for their grant applications;
and connect with others engaged in these activities.
In the first part of the workshop (Facilitator: Andreas Leidolf), participants will use
interactive, facilitated exercises based on methodologies from the emerging
discipline of science community management, to (1) articulate their science
communication needs and/or goals (communication pillars); (2) assess their
current science communication activities and channels (communications audit); (3)
consider these, as well as additional/alternative channels as part of a larger
communication tools landscape; and (4) map their goals onto that landscape to
develop a communications strategy and calendar; enabling them to proactively
communicate their science to relevant audiences.

In the second part of the workshop (Facilitator: Jeannine Huenemann), participants
will learn how to adapt their content to social media channels and other
communication tools. Depending on audience interest, topics discussed may include
an overview of social media channels; unique considerations, lessons learned, and
best practices for communicating science through social media; as well as
peripheral tools for establishing more effective communication workflows when
using social media.
The third and last part of the workshop (Facilitator: Ellen Eiriksson) will focus on
the use of in-person outreach for science communication, including an overview of
potential partners in the state; a discussion of special considerations, lessons
learned, and best practices for engaging with outreach partners; as well as a survey
of successful outreach activities supported or facilitated by the iUTAH project.
